ABOUT THE AMANI FESTIVAL

Celebrating Diversity Within Central Pennsylvania
The Amani Festival is a one day multi-cultural festival designed to bring people together from various backgrounds to learn more about each other. We connect diverse customers, employees, and neighbors to foster happier, healthier, and more fulfilled lives.
The Amani Festival takes place in downtown Carlisle on the first Saturday in May and attracts vistors throughout Central Pennsylvania The multi-cultural concept was the brainchild of the founder and first Chairman of the Amani Committee, Floyd Stokes; Mr. Stokes noticed soon after he decided to live in Carlisle that the community offered little in the way of diversity education. As a result of this observation, Mr.Stokes formally organized the Amani Festival Committee and the decision was made to hold the festival on an annual basis on the streets of downtown Carlisle .
Such a festival would enable people to share their ethnic arts, crafts, dress, cuisine, customs, dance, and song while simultaneously enjoying these elements of other cultures and religions. The name adopted for the one day festival, “AMANI”, means peace in Swahili.
The Amani Festival has grown steadily over the years and its trademark has always been its commitment to remain a multi-ethnic festival. The Festival is made possible by people and organizations within the Central PA area that see the value in promoting peace and unity throughout the community.
